Am I Talking With Your Employees More Than You Are?
Kyle Patrick Smith, HRKyle Services
If it feels like I’m talking with your employees more than you are… it might be true.
I say this all the time because I see it every single week across organizations of every size. Employees—especially the strong performers you’d hate to lose—are surprisingly honest with me. They tell me what frustrates them, what excites them, what they wish leadership understood, and what is quietly pushing them closer to updating their resume.
And that raises the real question:
Why are they telling me what they’re not telling you?
Let’s dig into what I’m hearing, why employees open up to an outside partner, and how leaders can fix this before it turns into turnover.
What Your Employees Are Telling Me
Every conversation I have with employees falls into predictable categories—signals that something important is happening underneath the surface.
Different Opinions on the Work Situation
Leaders often feel confident that the team is aligned, clear on priorities, and operating smoothly. But when I speak with the team, I hear a very different version of the same workplace.
And here’s the truth: neither side is wrong. They just aren’t communicating enough.
“Surprise Resignations” Aren’t Surprises
When a manager says, “This totally came out of nowhere,” I already know it didn’t. People almost always mentally quit long before they formally resign.
They’ve been navigating concerns or frustrations for months. They tried to solve them. They tried to tolerate them. Eventually, they gave up—and they tell me exactly what pushed them to that point.
Ideas That “My Manager Won’t Listen To”
This one comes up constantly.
Employees have ideas. Good ones.
Ideas that save time, improve workflow, reduce frustration, enhance service, or fix issues that have been ignored for years.
But instead of bringing those ideas to their manager, they bring them to me… and ask if I can deliver the message for them.
That’s not because they don’t care—it’s because they don’t feel heard.
Why Employees Open Up to Us
After 25+ years in HR, I’ve learned something simple but powerful:
- People talk to the person who creates space for them.
- They talk to the person who listens without judgment.
- They talk to the person who won’t punish them for honesty.
- They talk to the person who understands the workplace from the inside out.
It’s not that your employees don’t want to talk to you. They just don’t always believe it will lead to action.
That’s where HRKyle Services becomes invaluable.
The Value We Add (That Most Leaders Don’t Realize They Need)
When we partner with organizations, we become both a safe outlet for employees and a strategic mirror for leadership.
Here’s what we uncover and deliver:
- What employees wish they could say… but won’t.
- Issues that will soon impact morale, engagement, or retention.
- Disconnects between what leaders think is happening and what employees are experiencing.
- Opportunities to rebuild trust, improve clarity, and strengthen culture.
- Actionable solutions to address frustrations before they turn into resignations.
When leaders have this information, they lead proactively.
When they don’t, they lose good people.
That’s exactly why I created the resource below to help get you started.
