Beating the Sunday Scaries: How Employees and Leaders Can Start the Week Strong

By Kyle Patrick Smith, HRKyle Services

Most professionals know the feeling: it’s Sunday evening, the weekend is fading, and your mind starts racing through everything waiting for you Monday morning. That uneasiness has a name—the Sunday Scaries—and it’s more common than most people realize.

Surveys show that about 75 percent of workers experience the Sunday Scaries at least occasionally, and roughly one in seven feel them every week. Among younger professionals, the number climbs even higher.

The Sunday Scaries are the body’s way of responding to anticipatory stress—the anxiety that comes from thinking about deadlines, unfinished tasks, and workplace challenges before they arrive. But whether you’re an employee or a leader, there are ways to reclaim Sunday evening and approach the week ahead with purpose instead of panic.

Understanding Why It Happens

The Sunday Scaries aren’t just about dreading Monday—they’re about transition. You move abruptly from rest to responsibility, and your mind resists the change. Other factors play a role too:

  • Unclear priorities. When the week ahead feels vague, anxiety fills the gaps.
  • Poor work-life boundaries. If work bleeds into every weekend, you never truly rest.
  • Low engagement or burnout. When work feels draining, anticipation turns negative.
  • Habit. For some, it’s simply a conditioned response to years of work stress.

The good news: you can reset the pattern.

How Employees Can Overcome the Sunday Scaries

  • Reset your mindset. Instead of thinking “the weekend’s over,” reframe Sunday as preparation for success. A calm Sunday creates a confident Monday.
  • Plan lightly. You don’t need to map the entire week—focus on one or two things you’ll accomplish Monday morning.
  • Set a boundary for when you stop checking email or work messages. Protect your downtime and model healthy separation between work and rest.
  • Write it down. A quick “brain dump” of to-dos and reminders clears mental space and helps you sleep better.
  • Prioritize rest. Anxiety is louder when you’re tired. Create a routine that allows you to unwind—read, stretch, or take a short walk before bed.

By making Sunday an intentional transition day instead of an abrupt ending, you begin the week in control, not in reaction.

How Leaders Can Address the Sunday Scaries

If you lead others, the Sunday Scaries aren’t just an individual concern—they’re a leadership opportunity. The way a team feels on Sunday night often reflects the environment you’ve built Monday through Friday.

  • Communicate clearly. Send updates or weekly priorities on Friday before people disconnect. Clarity reduces weekend uncertainty.
  • Model boundaries. Avoid late-night or Sunday emails. Your habits set the tone for the team.
  • Normalize the conversation. Acknowledge that Sunday anxiety is real and worth discussing. Psychological safety starts with leaders who are human.
  • Promote recovery. Encourage genuine time off. When employees rest, they return sharper and more creative.
  • Start Mondays intentionally. Open the week with a brief check-in, an encouraging message, or a clear direction. Beginning with connection builds focus and trust.

Great leaders don’t eliminate stress—they help people manage it productively.

Turning Dread into Direction

The Sunday Scaries are a reminder that your relationship with work matters. They can signal that your boundaries need attention, your workload needs adjustment, or your mindset needs a reset.

Whether you’re an employee or a leader, the goal isn’t to make Mondays magical—it’s to make them manageable. When Sunday becomes a time to prepare instead of worry, the entire week feels different.
