It’s Time to Let HR Lead: Bridging the Gap Between People and Performance

By Kyle Patrick Smith, HRKyle Services

Last week, I had the privilege of meeting with students at Kent State University’s HR Expo and Networking Night — and I have to tell you, it was energizing. These students are sharp, curious, and hungry to make a difference. They’re not entering this field just to process paperwork or track policies. They want to help people, solve problems, and elevate organizations from the inside out.

And honestly, that’s exactly the kind of energy our profession needs right now.

The challenge? I’m not sure organizations are ready for them.

The Disconnect

There’s a growing gap between what employees — including HR professionals — want and what they’re actually receiving from their organizations. I see it all the time. HR teams are expected to build culture, lead engagement, drive retention, manage compliance, and now even guide AI adoption… but they’re often not given the resources, authority, or trust to truly lead.

It’s like asking someone to build a house but not giving them the tools.

That disconnect doesn’t just frustrate HR — it costs organizations real money. When leadership positions HR as a support function rather than a strategic partner, they miss out on insights that could reduce turnover, strengthen culture, and improve performance. The result is burnout, disengagement, and the very problems HR was hired to prevent.

What I Saw at Kent State

Talking with the next generation of HR professionals reminded me why I got into this field in the first place. They want to be excellent at what they do. They want to help people succeed. They’re asking the right questions — about inclusion, technology, leadership, and purpose.

But for them to thrive, companies have to change how they view HR. It can’t just be “the department that handles people stuff.” It has to be seen as the engine that drives growth, engagement, and trust across the entire organization.

Where Organizations Need to Start

Empowering HR starts with leadership — how executives structure, include, and develop their HR teams.
It means:

  • Giving HR a real seat at the table when decisions are made.
  • Investing in their tools, training, and professional development.
  • Treating HR not as a cost center, but as a value creator.
  • Encouraging collaboration between HR and operations rather than siloing them.

When organizations empower their HR teams, they empower everyone. You get stronger leaders, better communication, higher retention, and a culture where people want to stay and grow.

The Cost of Staying the Same

Too many organizations still see HR as reactive — not strategic. They undervalue the very people trying to help their teams succeed. The result? Slow progress, poor engagement, and wasted potential.

That’s not just frustrating. It’s expensive.

Change starts with leadership understanding that people strategy is business strategy.
